Sussex astronaut Piers Sellers took an original watercolour portrait of Cranbrook School, painted by Buxted artist Brenda Barratt, into outer space aboard the Space Shuttle in May 2010.

NASA astronaut Piers was a pupil at Cranbrook and Brenda was recently asked by Angela Daly, the school’s headteacher to paint a watercolour of the school.  The painting was then returned to Cranbrook School with the official NASA verification that it has travelled into space.

Piers Sellers is Britain's most famous spaceman having undertaken two NASA space missions and spent over 22 days in space and space-walked six times.

Brenda Barratt comes from an artistic family and works from her studios in Buxted, East Sussex. "Most of my work involves architecture - I've painted well over five hundred house portraits over the years. I've also painted dozens of schools and colleges too."
